SafeMap — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2 July 2026

The short version

SafeMap itself does not collect, store, or share any personal data. There are no accounts, no analytics of our own, and no tracking by us. The Android app shows a single advertisement when it is opened with an internet connection (see "Advertising" below); the web version is completely ad-free.

Advertising (Android app only)

The SafeMap Android app shows one advertisement when the app is opened, served by Google AdMob — and nothing after that. If you are offline (the situation SafeMap is built for), no ad is shown at all and the app opens instantly. To serve and measure ads, Google may collect device information such as advertising identifiers, as described in Google's advertising policy and Google's privacy policy. In the European Economic Area and the UK you will be asked for consent before personalized ads are shown, and you can decline. We (the developer) do not receive or store any of this data. Your location is never shared with advertisers.

Location

If you tap "Locate", your device's GPS position is used only on your phone to show your position on the map and calculate distances to saved locations. Your position is never sent to us or to any server.

Downloaded map data

When you save an area (while online), the app downloads map tiles from OpenStreetMap tile servers and location data from the Overpass API (both operated by the OpenStreetMap community). These requests include the map area you are viewing, like any map website. The downloaded data is stored only on your device and can be deleted in the app at any time.

Storage

Saved areas, map tiles, and settings are stored locally on your device (browser storage). Uninstalling the app or clearing site data removes everything.

Third parties

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License. The Leaflet map library is loaded from the unpkg CDN.

Disclaimer

Location data is community-mapped and provided "as is". In a real emergency, always follow instructions from local authorities. SafeMap is an aid, not a guarantee.
